Test Day! (1/31)

Happy Tuesday!

Today, we took the chapter 5A test; it covered sections 1-4 and 6 from Chapter 5.

After the tests, students got a progress report from this class. They had the opportunity to work on any make-up work that they needed to.

Nothing is due tomorrow, but make-up work is due by Friday.

Review Day (1/30)

Gooooooood Monday morning to you all!

(I did not remember to post on Friday because we went to the middle school to do "Apangea" orientation on the laptops. There was no homework for the weekend)

Today, Monday, January 30th, we reviewed sections 5-1, 5-2, 5-3, 5-4, and 5-6 to prepare for the Chapter 5A Test that is TOMORROW. Students received their 5-1/5-2 Re-Quiz back, we went over that, received a study guide, and went over that. Students did have time to work on the review problems from their book, but any unfinished review questions are due tomorrow.

For Tomorrow:

STUDY! Make sure you are ready for your test tomorrow by reviewing your quiz, your notes, and doing practice questions. Finish the practice questions from the study guide:

page 343: #1-5, 7-9, 12-13

page 382-384: #4,6,8,13,14,16,18,20,28,32,38,42

Direct Variation (1/26)

Today, we did a warm-up that led us right into the lesson for the day. We went over the slope homework from last night, and then took notes on section 5-6: Direct Variation. The key to the lesson....y=kx

Re-Quiz, Re-Learn (1/25)

Today, we did the "re-quiz" on 5-1/5-2. The warm-up reviewed concepts that were on the quiz (intercepts and linear functions). The quiz looked similar to the partner quiz from last week, but this time it was taken individually and with no notes.

After the quiz, we went over the slope homework from last night (page 328 #11-17), and students had a chance to practice more slope stuff by doing page 327-328 #1-7 and #22.

Slope Formula (1/24)

Yesterday, (Tuesday), we did a warm-up reviewing adding integers and finding x and y intercepts.

We went over the slope worksheet from Monday.

The lesson from section 5-4 connected finding slope on an actual graph to finding slope when you're just given two points. Learning about slope is the most important thing we're going to cover all year! After using the formula to find slope with several examples, students had a chance to practice their skills by doing #11-17 on page 328.

Slope! (1/23)

Today, we did a warm-up that reviewed 2 things: knowing if something is a linear function, and graphing using intercepts.

We went over the 5-1/5-2 Partner Quiz--because it was really bad--and students wrote in the correct answers on it and turned it in. They will be getting a participation grade for doing that. NOTE: students will receive their corrected quizzes back tomorrow so they can study for the quiz on Wednesday.

We did a short lesson on finding the slope of a line with a graph (5-3 from the book). It's all about the RISE/RUN.

Rate of Change (1/20)

Today, we did a warm-up reviewing independent and dependent variables. As a part of the warm-up, we discussed "rate of change" and how that is the change in the dependent variable divided by the change in the independent variable. I let students know we would be doing that with numbers and graphs on Monday.

After discussing the independent and dependent variables, we did an activity with a motion detector. Students were given a situation (for example: someone starts at the motion detector, walks away for 3 meters, stops, and then walks to the 5 meter mark), and they had to graph what they though that would look like. After predicting the graph, someone volunteered to model the particular situation, and they graphed the real graph.

Due Monday:

On the blank sheet of paper I gave you at the end of class, you need to write a sentence at the bottom that is like this:

________________ depends on __________________.

My example was "How sleepy I am depends on how late I stayed up last night."

Above the sentence you need illustrate the independent and dependent variables from your sentence. (So for my example, I would draw a picture of me staying up late for the independent variable and picture of me being really sleepy the next day).
