2-6part B (Solving Absolute Value Equations) (9/30)

Today we did a warm-up that reviewed 2-5 and the first part of 2-6. After the warm-up, we jumped right in to the second part of section 2-6. It was still solving absolute value equations, but this time there were two special cases (one solution and no solution). We also covered a couple of word problems.

Finishing Test, Defining Words, and Absolute Value (9/29)

Today, we had a notebook quiz! The students had to staple together 5 things: Notes from 2-3, Notes from 2-5, and Warm-Ups from 9/28, 9/23, abd 9/19.

After the notebook quiz, the students who didn't finish their test yesterday, finished it. Those who finished the test started on their vocabulary. All students need to finish defining the yellow words from sections 2-7, 2-8, 2-9, and 2-10 (starting page 120).

After that, I taught a brief lesson on solving equations with absolute value from section 2-6.

Finish your vocabulary!

2-5 (Solving Literal Equations) (9/23)

Today, we literally solve literal equations! (ha!)

First we did a warm-up that involved reviewing solving equations with variables on both sides when the answer is either "all real numbers" or when it is "no solution." After going over that and the homework, we started in on the last lesson of this unit, "Solving Literal Equations."

By the way, a literal equation is just an equation that has more than one variable like: A=lw or m-n=5.

The students all had a chance to start on the homework which is....

Due Monday: page 109 #2,3,4,6,9,10

PS- I'm going to be unable to be at school on Monday due to my grandmother's funeral services. I explained to the class that while I am gone, they are to be doing review work in order to prepare for their test. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers!

2-4 Part C (9/22)

Guess what we did today? We solved equations! (big surprise) :)

The warm-up covered solving equations with a variable on one side with fractions in the problems. The lesson mostly covered a couple more examples of "no solution" and "all real number" -type questions as well as a couple of word problems. The end of class was spent practicing the skills by working on a worksheet.

Due tomorrow: The ODD problems done from the 2-4 practice worksheet

Short (9/21)

We did a warm-up on integers, went over homework, did 2 questions for a practice quiz, and then started to do two examples of something new.

Classes were shorter today because of the seminar, and behavior in all 3 classes today was horrible. Students will need to be in a much better frame of mind tomorrow to get this solving equations thing done!

Due tomorrow: page 103 #10,12,13,24,32

Steppin' it Up (2-4-Solving Equations with Variables on Both Sides) (9/20)

Today, we did a warm-up we had to solve three-step equations. After going over the warm-up and homework, we did a lesson on section 2-4 from the textbook. This was the first part of 2-4. We'll do more tomorrow.

Practice! page 103 #2,4,6,8,9,16,20,23,26

Due tomorrow: (The practice questions listed above).

Practice Makes Perfect 2-3 (9/19)

Today, we needed to go over some more examples of solving multi-step equations. The quizzes were okay...but they weren't as good as they could have been!

We covered about 10 more examples of types of questions you could see when solving equations, and then did a whole lot of practice!

Practice Problems: p96 #5,6,12,21,22,24,26,29,30,32,33,36,38,40,49

Due tomorrow: all of the above practice problems

Some more 2-3 and a Quiz (9/16)

Today, we went over some more examples from section 2-3 (Solving Mult-Step Equations). We went over the homework from yesterday and any examples that people had a question about before the quiz. The class took a short quiz that covered sections 2-1 to 2-3. After the quiz, we did the calculator activity that we didn't get to do yesterday.

Due: NOTHING. No homework for the weekend! What? Crazy...I know. ;)

2-3 (Solving Multi-Step Equations) (9/15)

Today we did a warm-up covering order of operations. After going over the warm-up and the homework from the day before, I taught a lesson on section 2-3 from the book. This involved solving equations with more than one step.

In some classes, we finished the lesson and did a calculator activity. In other classes, we just finished the lesson (and we'll do the calculator activity tomorrow).

Due tomorrow: page 96 #2, 4, 8, 10, 11, 14, 16, and 19. Also, any test corrections from the Chapter 1 test have to be turned in by tomorrow!

Quiz on 2-1 to 2-3 is tomorrow as well! Study and be ready!!!

2-2 (Solving by x and /) (9/14)

Today we did a warm-up (which was the last problem from the Ch. 1 test) and went over it. After that, I taught a lesson on section 2-2 from the book about solving equations by multiplying and dividing. We did lots of fraction examples to make sure we were okay with those. We went over the homework from the "Problem Solving" worksheet to make sure everyone had the first four right.

After all of that, the students did practice on 2-2 by finishing the worksheet and doing problems #22,23,29,32,36,38,42, and 44 from pages 87 and 88.

Due tomorrow: Finished 2-2 Problem Solving Worksheet and p87-88 #22,23,29,32,36,38,42,44

Scheduling notes: Quiz on 2-1 to 2-3 is FRIDAY. Test corrections from Chapter 1 are due Friday. The 2-1 to 2-6 TEST will be next Friday, 9/23.

Go over stuff (9/13)

Today, we had a notebook quiz! The students had to staple together 5 things from their notebook--if you were absent, come see me to find out what the 5 things were.

Everybody also got their Chapter 1 test back. We went over the answers, and I answered any questions the students had about ones they got wrong. We also went over the procedure for correcting test for 1/2 credit back. (See below)

In some of the classes, we started section 2-2, but in all of the classes we went over the homework from 2-1.

Test Correction policy:

1) Write the number for each problem you missed.

2) Write an explanation of why you got it wrong (in sentence form).

3) Write and answer a NEW problem that is similar to the one you missed.

4) Staple those corrections to your original test.

THESE ARE DUE FRIDAY, 9/16!

2-1 (Solving Eqns by + and -) 9/12

Today, we went over section 2-1 in the book--how to solve one step equations using adding or subtracting. First, we modelled the problems using Algebra Tiles and modelled solving them. Then, we took notes on the section, and we finished up by doing a problem solving worksheet and some practice problems.

Due tomorrow:

Finish the Problem Solving worksheet and page 80 #21, 22, 25, 26, 34, 39, and 39

DEA Testing Day (9/9)

Hey everyone! I thought I had posted this, but apparently it didn't actually post. On Friday, 9/9, the classes did the "Think Link" DEA test--32 questions about Algebra. It is used to track progress through the course, so though there were some questions they've never seen before, the students will eventually know how to do those questions :)

Test day! 9/8

Today, all of the algebra classes took their Chapter 1 Test!

The test should be graded by Monday.

NO HOMEWORK! Woot woot!

In Review: 9/6-9/7

Sorry I'm late on posting these! I was out sick on Tuesday, and I'm still trying to catch up.

- On Tuesday and Wednesday, the students worked on practice problems to review for the test. On Wednesday, I taught a lesson going over any other skills that were missed on the quiz.

Due Thursday: page 66 #1-37, page 67 #1-6, page 70 and 71 #1-12, S1, E1

"Fill in the Gap" (9/1 and 9/2)

Both yesterday and today, we worked on "Filling in the Gap." Basically, I wanted to go over some skills that I felt the students needed to work on. We did a lesson or two, did some practice problems, and then took a quiz at the end of class today.

For 3A/6B and 4A/7B- pages 62-64 #7-9, 11-33, 39, 43, and 44 were due TODAY (Friday). If that wasn't turned in, the students may use one of their late passes to turn in the work on Tuesday.

The quizzes should be graded by Tuesday. The TEST will be Wednesday! (Note: that changed).
